- William Kason died June 23, 2024, in Riverside’s John J. Benoit Detention Center. He was arrested over a non-violent misdemeanor, according to his complaint. He died from injuries he suffered as a result of his arrest, the complaint says. His family sues the Indio Police Department, Indio, the County of Riverside, Sheriff Chad Bianco, and Corrections Deputies Timothy Vrooman, Francisco Pereira and Juan Gonzalez Ruiz. The complaint brings 11 causes of action, including for denial of medical care, failure to protect from harm, deprivation of right to familial relationship, and violation of the California Civil Rights Act.

- The family of deceased San Diego police officer Lawrence Orso sue after he died in the Cois M. Byrd Detention Center parking lot. He was arrested on a driving under the influence charge on Sept. 21, 2024, according to the family’s complaint. He had a blood alcohol concentration of .23 percent at the time of booking, and was held in the detox cell for 1.5 hours before being released. He was not cleared for release by medical staff, according to the complaint. He was experiencing chest pain at the time of his release. Ten minutes after being released, Orso collapsed. His body was not noticed for forty minutes, the complaint claims. The complaint brings nine charges, including deliberate indifference, negligence and failure to summon medical care.

- A former inmate at three Riverside County jails sues on claims of negligence, premises liability and negligent and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Colbert was arrested Sept. 18. On Sept. 25, while held in the Cois M. Byrd Detention Center, Colbert slipped on water leaking from his toilet, his complaint claims. He slipped on the same cell due to the leak on Sept. 28, and again on Sept. 30, the complaint says. He claims lasting injuries from the falls. The suit was originally filed in Riverside Superior Court.
