Pretrial defendant beaten by inmates sues Riverside County

A man beaten by two inmates in the John J. Benoit Detention Center filed suit against Riverside Sheriff Chad Bianco, the Riverside Sheriff’s Department and Riverside County on Oct. 14.

Jonathin James Onello was arrested March 26 after allegedly stealing a bike intentionally left out by sheriff’s deputies, according to his complaint. On April 1, he was beaten by two men. The assault was in a video-recorded area, but not interrupted by correctional officers. Onello was not taken to a hospital until 13 hours after the beating, the complaint says.
