There are ways to collectively grieve from tragedies. Lying to each other is not one of them. Spreading whatever rumors you hear isn’t one. Co-opting a death to push your political agenda isn’t one either.
On the afternoon Wednesday, Sept. 13, I was on a call with members of the state’s court interpreter union about their ongoing negotiations with the courts of Southern California. When I got off the call, at 1:07, I looked at my phone and saw an AP news notification that Charlie Kirk had been assassinated. After reading their article, I opened my Instagram and saw a video of him dying.
